Rochelle Rae says she decided to make “real makeup for real people” when she grew tired of struggling with the makeup that was available. Looking at Rae it is hard to imagine that the blue-eyed beauty would ever feel insecure about her looks, but Rae admits, “I had bad skin in high school, I felt I needed to hide it. Now I can really make people feel good about themselves.” And she does.

I want to get to know more about Rochelle. I want to find out why Rae Cosmetics products are flying off her shelves and why Austin's prettiest are flocking to her for consultations.
How did you go about starting your own line? Research––{lots} of research [laughs]. I didn't know if I was going to have to start experimenting by cooking with pots on the stove, mixing stuff up and grinding all my ingredients together or what. I'd read about other artists and how they got started, and I searched for manufacturers who specialized in makeup lines so I could figure out who would be able to do what I wanted.
And what was that?
A makeup line that's pure, mineral-based and didn't have a lot of the additives in it. It's fragrance free, oil free and non-comedogenic (which means it won't clog your pores). … There were a lot of things that I didn't want it to have and then there were a lot of things that I did want in there like vitamins E and C, antioxidants and sunscreen. I wanted it to be something that you could put on that was good for your skin.
Is that what makes Rae Cosmetics different?
What makes it different is that my clientele is in Austin, Texas. It's hot. It's 101 outside today. You don't want to have on 10 pounds of makeup. Sometimes women will pile loads of makeup on, walk outside and it just melts off them. Mine is very sheer. It evens out your skin tones, and it's not like wearing a big, heavy mask.
